Uniting the Gulf

In a groundbreaking alliance, Gulf Oil International became Manchester United Football Club’s first lubricant and fuel retail partner in early 2016 — the first of its kind for a Premier League club. With legions of fans across the globe, including here in T&T, Manchester United is one of the world’s most beloved football clubs and rightly so. As one of the most decorated football clubs, with trophies from all major football championships, including the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and FA cup, the “Red Devils” have given audiences decades of thrilling entertainment and Old Trafford has been the home of exceptionally talented football players, including David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, and Bobby Charlton. Naturally, this star power makes Manchester United the world’s most valuable football brand and a fitting partner for Gulf Oil International.

From its roots in the discovery of Texan oil in 1901, Gulf Oil International has grown to become one of the world’s most recognizable lubricant and fuel brands. As the football club’s commercial director, Jamie Reigle, explains, “we are industry leaders who believe in a partnership achieving mutual growth. We are better together, when we stand United”. With over 100 years of history each, both organizations intend to grow into the future, mainly with a focus on the Asian market where they share a strong base, with the club’s 325 million followers and Gulf’s increasing presence in the region, including a new state-of-the-art lubricant factory in India.

Their partnership has kicked off with the dual-branded “United Oils”, an exclusive range of Gulf’s most popular oils featuring United players, and a tour of China, which included T&T’s own ManU alumnus Dwight Yorke, featuring match screenings, fan parties and interactive online initiatives. 

Gulf Oil has an established history of motorsport sponsorship, including close associations with “Le Mans” race, Aston Martin racing, and BMW Milwaukee Superbikes. Their latest foray into football allows the company to expand that experience into a new sporting arena. As Frank Rutten, Gulf Oil International’s vice president, proudly explains, "Gulf is regarded as an iconic brand in motorsport circles”, and this opportunity will allow a new fan base to become familiar with the company. 

Indeed, motorsport is the “beating heart” of Gulf Oil and locally, this concept resonates. Lange Trinidad, the exclusive distributors for Gulf Oil in Trinidad and Tobago, supply Gulf Oil lubricants to the company’s sponsored vehicles on the motorsport circuit. That’s not to say that Gulf Oil lubricants are only for professional sporting vehicles.
